Response to: Living on $1.50

If you had to live on US$1.50 per day could you do it?

A colleague of mine posted this challenge on his blog last week, and he completed it on November 6th and posted his review here.

I interpreted the challenge a bit differently, and rather than trying to spend $1.50 each day, I tried to plan for a week of food. Here is my shopping list which works out to $1.46 per day. The extra $.04 would cover the salt, oil etc, that may be used:

one challenge

This is a possible menu combination.

  • Rice + Tuna
  • Rice + Chili
  • Scrambled Eggs + Bread
  • Boiled Eggs + Bread
  • Chili + Bread
  • Tuna + Eggs
  • Rice + Eggs + Beans = Fried Rice

I could think of a number of ways to mix and match meals out of this, and of course drink water instead of juices.

So to answer my own question: Could I live on $1.50 per day? YES. But, would I want to? NO! :-) I have had to live that way at different points in my life, and it's always best to have to do it by choice rather than by need. Some people don't have a choice.

I can see how challenging it would be to try a do this day by day since most of the items on my shopping list exceeded $1.50. So if i woke up each day with only $1.50 in my pocket, I'd probably fast for a week and save up, then plan and shop for my menu for the next week.

What would you do if you had to live off $1.50 per day?

I am happy you interpreted my blog post this way. I think this shows people who are interested just what it may feel like to live like this constantly. I did the challenge for one day and it was so hard.

But still, billions of people live like this every day, every year.

Let's end POVERTY.
